Off the clock

The part that isn't in the job description.

I watch a great deal of Korean television, and some boys' love (BL) series from elsewhere in Asia. I sing karaoke with more enthusiasm than talent. I write a blog about React Native and how mobile teams build and release apps. I was born and raised in Barcelona to Filipino parents, and I've lived in the UK since 2016.

How to work with me

Small things, mostly. They're what make a week easier.

This helps

  • Start by telling me what you need. Being direct saves us both time.
  • Interrupt me even when I'm wearing headphones. They only block out office noise.
  • If a message thread is getting long, book a 30-minute call.
  • Show me your work while it's still taking shape. It's easier to suggest changes before you've finished.

This doesn't

  • Jokes about my professionalism. If something I've done has bothered you, tell me directly.
  • Assuming I'm fine because I've gone quiet.
  • Calling without warning about something that can wait until tomorrow.

How I work

The coffee is not a metaphor.

Working hours Monday to Friday, 9am to 5.30pm UK time

Fig. 2A working day, to scale

My head starts working properly after the first coffee, around 9.30am. I spend the first half hour on email, Slack and deciding what matters most today.

Feedback

In writing, please. I respond better when I've had time to think.

Give me feedback in writing so I have time to think before responding. Be specific. You can disagree with my ideas in a group discussion, but please discuss my behaviour or performance with me privately.

When I'm under pressure, I'll tell you if I'm struggling. If I become unusually quiet near a deadline, ask me how I'm managing.

My personality profile

These results can help explain how I work, but they don't describe everything about me.

The figures in this section come from my own results on 16Personalities and the HEXACO-PI-R. I took the main 16Personalities questionnaire on 4 September 2026.

Patterns I recognise in both results

I also took the HEXACO-PI-R on 5 September 2026. It uses a different model, but I recognise two patterns across the results and in how I work. HEXACO compares these scores with a group of Canadian university students. The average score for that group is 5.00.

  • I check my work carefully and persist when it gets difficult.

I check my work before sharing it. I can spend too long improving details, so tell me when it meets what you need.

    • 16PersonalitiesPerfectionism 90%, Grit 100%
    • HEXACOConscientiousness 6.43, Perfectionism 6.64
  • I'm direct, and I prefer to resolve disagreements.

You can be direct with me. If we've had a disagreement, I'd rather discuss it than leave it unresolved.

    • 16PersonalitiesThinking over Feeling, 54%
    • HEXACOAgreeableness 3.54, Forgivingness 3.16

Commander (ENTJ-A)

In September 2024, the same questionnaire gave me Adventurer (ISFP-A). My result has changed, so I treat the type as a description rather than a fixed identity.

  • Energy 56% Extraverted
  • Mind 60% Intuitive
  • Nature 54% Thinking
  • Tactics 57% Judging
  • Identity 61% Assertive

Fig. 3Five scales from one questionnaire

The dotted line marks 50%. Four of my five scores are within ten percentage points of it, so most are close to the middle. I recognise the Assertive result most in how I work: I usually stay calm when problems arise and prefer to hear about them early.

What influences my results at work

These scores come from a separate 16Personalities questionnaire about how much influence I believe I have over what happens at work. Each factor is scored independently, so the percentages don't add up to 100%.

  • 75% My own actions
  • 62% People with influence
  • 49% Chance

Fig. 4Locus of control, at work

My highest score was for my own actions. This suggests I tend to see my decisions and effort as the main ways I can influence results at work.

The report incorrectly identifies chance as the second-highest factor; the displayed scores put people with influence second. I've omitted the personal and social results because their stated primary categories also disagree with their scores.
